Job Summary The Assistant Director is responsible for the planning, coordination, and management of our large and diverse Facilities and Operations Department.
Reporting to the Director, this is an essential position in Facilities and Operations.

Responsibilities Plans, schedules and directs staff of skilled and unskilled trades employees in the maintenance of buildings and grounds Ensures that all utility systems are fully operational and inspected in accordance with preventative maintenance schedules Serves as the Facilities and Operations energy leader and coordinator for sustainability and energy savings initiatives; this role includes routinely collaborating and interfacing with the UM Ann Arbor energy team as well as communicating and coordinating campus energy initiatives with Consumers Energy renewable energy team Prepares cost estimates for building renovations or space allocations and inspects completed work for conformance to specifications Management duties include the authority to hire, fire or promote.
This will also include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary Provides a leadership role in budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling, and procedural change Oversees the development and management of the annual campus deferred maintenance budget and provides leadership to Facilities and Operations project staff related to deferred and other campus projects Enforces adherence with all applicable safety standards and environmental laws and regulations Maintains and enhances existing strong working relationships with on-campus and external customers Develops, refines and implements policies, procedures and goals/objectives pertaining to relevant business units Serve as a member of the Facilities and Operations management team participating in the development of departmental goals, objectives, policies, processes and procedures Participates with the other members of the management team and University partners in planning and the design of new programs, projects, scheduling/coordination of work, etc.
Prepares data and track metrics for short and long term planning Serves as a steward of University assets and resources.
Provides administrative support to the Director Communicates with management on behalf of the Director Acts as a proxy for the Director as needed in their absence Collaborates with the Director to sustain, promote, and grow departmental programs and services Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field 3 or more years' management experience in operations and maintenance of facilities of comparable function and complexity; must also include supervision and budget management Experience with union staff and collective bargaining agreements Experience leading a workforce of skilled and unskilled trades employees in the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
Must possess or be able to obtain a Michigan drivers license and be able to operate a university owned vehicle.
Work Schedule In-Person:
This position requires a fully in-person work schedule at this time and is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department.
